E. W. Oliver Elementary Schools Celebrates STEM Innovation with Hands-On Farming Robot Unboxing and Community Engagement Event
Riverdale , Georgia — February 22, 2025 — E. W. Oliver Elementary School recently hosted an exciting event to officially launch its new STEM Club initiative, featuring the unboxing, building, and installation of a state-of-the-art farming robot. The event engaged 25 fourth and fifth grade students under the guidance of Mrs. Gant , STEM Teacher and the local community with interactive stations that highlighted the power of hands-on learning in the fields of science, technology, engineering, and agriculture.
Guests at the event had the opportunity to participate in a variety of educational activities, including taking photos at a themed booth, matching plants and herbs with their corresponding seeds, completing a survey to help decide which plants to grow, and even planting their own seeds to take home and nurture. The event was a great success, allowing students to actively engage with the community while demonstrating how STEM skills can be applied to real-world problems.
Key contributors to the event included Mr. Keith Parker, a community stakeholder and agricultural STEM coach for the club, as well as Mr. Alfonzo Smith and the Veteran Helping Veterans Communications and Outreach Division, who supported the event's outreach efforts. Additionally, Tyler Kinner and Moeini Reily from Georgia Tech lead the installation process and expertise of the farming robot, further enriching the learning experience for the students. Their dedication to the installation was impeccable!
“This event not only celebrated the launch of our STEM Club but also showcased the creativity and curiosity that our students bring to STEM learning,” said Mrs. Crew Principal of Oliver Elementary ]. “The students had the opportunity to explore the future of agricultural technology while also fostering a sense of community and teamwork.”
Ariel Gant, a sophomore at Martha Ellen Stillwell School of the Arts, also made a significant contribution by helping bring the STEM Club’s vision of the farming robot to life. Ariel designed the character of the robot and created a short animation, giving the robot a personality. Named “Oliver Farmbot” after the school’s name, the character added a fun, creative element to the event, allowing students to connect with the robot in a unique way. Ariel Gant is also a former student at Oliver.
